Chevron Phillips Chemical is seeking a Research Technician for the Kingwood Research Technology facility. Responsibilities will include working with chemists, engineers, and analytical personnel to execute safe operation of bench scale and pilot plant systems, troubleshooting unit issues, blending oil samples for lubricant formulations and maintaining lab analysis equipment. Available position requires detail-oriented individual with the ability to work safely in a team-oriented environment. Previous manufacturing or laboratory experience required.

Principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with the chemist to execute desired experiments.

  • Following established quality, safety and environmental procedures and policies.

  • Operating lab instruments and equipment in a safe and professional manner.

  • Maintaining lab unit and equipment, ensuring adequate lab supply inventories, conducting instrument calibrations/checks.

  • Maintaining work area in a safe, clean, and organized manner.

  • Working with various global functions within the R&D community to fulfill experiment/sample requirements.

  • Comply with all health, safety and environmental practices and policies.

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum associate degree in a scientific discipline or process technology certifications.

  • Minimum of 5 years of laboratory/manufacturing experience.

  • Strong commitment to safety.

  • Good analytical and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to complete assigned projects in a safe and timely manner.

  • Ability to read schematic drawings, product manuals, and application flow sheets to troubleshoot equipment.

  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)

  • Maintaining process instruments including chromatographs, viscometers and other types of analytical equipment.

  • Capable of standing for long periods of time on concrete flooring, bending, stooping and other physical tasks.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a Fitness For Duty (FFD) Evaluation / Functional Capacity Exam (FCE)

  • Must be able to successfully pass a respirator fit test; in addition to annual respirator fit testing post hire.

  • Some physical lifting is required, including the movement of equipment weighing 55 lbs or less.

  • The successful candidate will utilize, as required, personal protective equipment such as respirators, protective foot wear, hearing protection, eye/face protection, gloves, chemical and/or fire-retardant clothing, etc.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a basic science or equivalent education.

  • Minimum of 10 years of laboratory experience.

  • Experience working with hazardous chemicals.

  • Experience in a lab or pilot plant environment

  • Experience with polymer/oligomerization chemistry

  • Familiarity with autoclave and process control systems

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Good oral and written communication skills to document results of experiments

  • Ability to work with a diverse team including analysts, production, and R&D to ensure the best overall result

  • Self-driven with high degree of initiative and time management skills.

  • Must be highly organized, flexible and capable of adapting to priority changes on a regular basis
